The change of the seasons is best observed in the countryside. In March, I left New York for Wisconsin, and soon after my arrival, the silver spruces started producing new, neon green leaves. Within weeks, there were suddenly garden yellow rockets and a smattering of small white flowers poking out from bush honeysuckle on my post-work walks. Most springs, I’m in the city, equally in awe of the flowering trees. But with city trees, you marvel briefly, maybe snapping a photo before moving on. Being immersed in spring’s growth this year felt different entirely, like a much-needed reprieve from the craziness of the world.
Now, the trees are at their full fall glory, turning orange and red, and drawing crowds of observers. It seems that everyone can use some time immersed in the countryside no matter how short or long their visit. Photographer Landon Phillips recently spent some time in the Adirondacks at a family cabin. He not only managed to capture summer turning into autumn, but also our favorite fall footwear.
As we reach for knits and shop for boots, we’re capturing the countryside in our wardrobes. This season, some of the best boots are the sturdy variety meant for time spent outdoors—think work boots, boots made from durable leather, and warm, shearling-lined iterations. They’ve even been given some high-fashion currency thanks to brands like Louis Vuitton, and Valentino, which have incorporated the styles into their collections. These country boots are the ultimate fresh-off-the-runway fall pick-me-up that will keep you ready for the cold months ahead, no matter where the pile of leaves you’re stomping through may be.
