Attending the 2024 Emmy Awards would be a nerve-racking experience for any celebrity guest—but for co-host Dan Levy, the stakes were that much higher. Serving as the emcee of the ceremony with his dad, the iconic Eugene Levy, by his side, Dan says hosting the evening was an entirely surreal experience (though, he and his dad totally nailed it, of course). “It was a huge honor,” Levy tells Vogue. “It’s one of those things that you practice and rehearse and write, and then suddenly it’s happening.”

Of course, as easy as Dan and Eugene made it look last night, hosting the Emmys took weeks and weeks of preparations. “We worked with an amazing team of writers, and my dad and I sat with them and wrote the monologue,” says Levy. “We pitched some jokes, we rehearsed. I even set up a little teleprompter in my living room, and we were running through it.” Levy is no stranger to working with his dad, though, having created, written, and starred in Schitt’s Creek with him. He says there’s nobody else he’d rather go to work with. “We had a lot of fun! It’s so much easier to do something like this with someone else,” he says. “Especially when you already have chemistry.”

Nailing the jokes on stage wasn’t the only preparations Levy needed to do for Emmys night, however. Working with stylist Harry Lambert, Levy also aimed to bring a chic fashion spectacle to the main stage. And boy, did he deliver: Levy and Lambert zeroed in on five stellar looks throughout the evening, all of which displayed classic tailoring—with a twist. “When we started conversations, we knew we wanted to do something timeless, but really focus on modern silhouettes,” says Lambert. Levy added, “The bar was high. At the end of the day, I didn’t want to do anything too crazy, and yet, you want to subvert expectations and play around with what black tie could look like.”

Levy kicked off the evening on a strong note: He stepped out wearing a sleek single-breasted Loewe suit with a silky off-white silk scarf top. (Not your standard shirt and tie.) “I remember seeing that look at the [spring 2025 menswear] show, and thinking that it was a really eye-catching and beautiful swerve on black tie suiting,” says Levy. Since Lambert knew Levy would be wearing a lot of suits throughout the ceremony, he wanted the star’s red carpet look to have an added sense of drama; The look felt just right. “We thought it would be fun to treat the red carpet as our fun, editorial risk moment, and do something that felt fresh, modern, and exciting,” says Lambert.

When it came time for his on-stage hosting looks, the duo then experimented with a variety of designer looks. “The looks that I chose for the show are the best of the best,” says Levy. “There was a cohesive narrative through all of them—they’re all polished, but feel fresh.” First up were some amazing Saint Laurent suits. “You can’t get tailoring any better than Saint Laurent,” says Lambert. “We had these beautiful classic black and velvet tuxes, with exaggerated shoulders and pointed shiny heels. The looks felt nostalgic, yet the silhouettes felt so modern and unique.”

For mid-ceremony, Levy and Lambert switched things up with a more casual-cool moment from Prada. “It was a knit with this patent snakeskin belt attached to the trousers,” says Lambert. “To have this curveball of a look, in the middle of the show, was a fun surprise.” For the finale, meanwhile, the duo ended with a navy Saint Laurent suit with brown accents. “It felt Old Hollywood,’ but with a sense of fun,” says Lambert. “Dan’s entering a new era with his fashion: very Old School meets ’90s tailoring, very Tom Ford Saint Laurent.”

It’s safe to say Levy made the Emmys his fashion playground. Not only did he ace his hosting skills, but he aced his slick wardrobe, too. Lambert says Levy’s willingness to experiment and go for it is what makes him so fun to dress. “I love working with Dan because I relate to him the most out of all the talent I work with; We probably have the most similar taste in fashion,” says Lambert. “He’s not scared to take a risk, and he loves to dress up.” For Levy, the feeling of respect and trust was mutual. “When you’re working with Harry, you know you’re in the best hands,” he says.
