It’s been 22 years since Diana Ross graced the Met Gala with her iconic presence, but last night at the 2025 Met Gala celebrating Black dandyism, the legendary singer made her return—in epic style, no less. Ross shut down the red carpet this evening with a look that was equal parts glamorous and personal: Her sweeping white gown, punctuated with crystals and beads, featured an 18-foot train embroidered with the names of her children and grandchildren.
Ross’s commanding design for the evening was brought to life from a close collaboration between Ross, her son Evan, and Nigerian designer Ugo Mozie. Together, they wanted to spotlight a tailored design that celebrated her family legacy—by spanning the generations of the Ross name, and doing so through refined style. The embroidered names include her children’s—Rhonda, Tracee, Chudney, Ross, and Evan—and her eight grandchildren’s—Raif, Callaway, Everlee, Leif, Indigo, Jagger, Bronx, and Ziggy.
For her second ensemble of the evening, Ross changed into a frothy beaded purple and black tulle gown for the inside festivities. Turns out, Ross designed it herself. And the inspiration? It was her outfits in the classic 1975 movie, Mahogany. (Ross designed her glamorous gowns in that film, too.) Her dress was the perfect tie-in to Zendaya’s white Louis Vuitton zoot suit, given that Mahogany was the reference for that design. (Vogue has an exclusive photo of them together, below.)
Last night marked Ross’s fifth Met Gala. She first attended back in 1978 alongside legendary designer Halston. Since then, the singer has continued to bring her signature glitz to the Met steps, most notably in 2003, when she wore a flowy red Gucci gown. Her thoughtful designs this year, however, proved to be one of her most glamorous—not to mention incredibly sweet and memorable.
