DJ Khaled looked perfectly dapper in his suit for the Oscars last night. The manicured music mogul put it quite simply: “If you want me to be honest, [the suit] makes me see what everyone else sees: icon,” says Khaled. The ensemble was custom created by Dolce Gabbana and Khaled’s longtime fashion creative director of 17 years, Terrell Jones. Of course, getting to icon status isn’t necessarily easy. Roughly seven Milanese tailors were there to make sure that the suit fit Khaled to perfection. “There is a lot of greatness you’re working with,” he said. “Even my belly had a little…they adjusted to my greatness!” Jones adds, “The creative process was amazing; it consisted of everything from fabric selections, custom design work, and master tailors flown all the way in from Italy to make sure the process was seamless and done to perfection.”
Suit or otherwise, this wouldn’t be fully a classic Khaled look without something shiny. He wore a hulking, diamond-encrusted, $3 million dollar timepiece from the famed jeweler Jacob Co and a dazzling pinky ring akin to a small planet. “Suit from Milan, chandelier on the wrist—focused,” says Khaled.
Khaled has been a longtime lover of fashion. Yet, he isn’t stuffy with his clothes, nor does he try to be a peacock. Instead, Khaled has fun with his looks, and pays tender attention to the details of his outfits. (He even pays attention to his decor: While getting ready for the Oscars, he relaxed on pillows and blankets by Dolce Gabbana Casa.) Over the past few years, we’ve seen him in rotations of loud camp shirts with some head-turning prints, robin’s egg blue Jordan sneakers, and a shiny leather shirt. He’s the king of dressing for his larger-than-life personality–and he would agree. “The best style advice: always be you, be yourself not just in style but in life always be you,” says Khaled. “That is the key to everything because yourself is the greatest person.”
