Wondering who the man in the red smoking jacket was at the 2018 Emmys? It might not be who you think— it’s celebrated multi-hyphenate Donald Glover, but it s Glover as Teddy Perkins, the title character from his cinematic episode of Atlanta. Seated in the front row, Perkins gave Bill Hader a hug as he took the stage to accept his award for Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for Barry. Which means that we very narrowly missed out on Glover accepting the award live as Perkins, which would have been . . . something.
“Teddy Perkins” aired in April to critical acclaim—it features a character named Teddy Perkins who is a millionaire intending to turn his creepy mansion into a museum. The episode, which aired with no commercial breaks, has a horror element, and Hiro Murai (who directed Glover s video for “This Is America” directed, and was nominated for it at the awards along with Glover.
Needless to say the Internet was surprised to see Perkins in the audience; but, knowing that Glover supposedly staying in costume and makeup and character during the filming of the whole episode on set, it s a little more expected from the idiosyncratic show creator.
