Welcome to the second iteration of Vogue’s global spa guide, an index of the 100 best spas in the world, built from the expertise of our global editors and trusted contributors. There is a lot to choose from in the world of wellness, and no matter how far you’re planning to travel—from a subway ride to a trans-Atlantic flight—we want to make sure it’s worth the journey. Whatever your path, let us be your guide.
Why go here?
Stanly Ranch’s Halehouse is a spa for high achievers. About an hour from San Francisco and the land of ROI and KPIs, it’s committed to a results-driven approach to well-being, with state-of-the-art technology and world-class visiting coaches, medical experts, and practitioners. Building a new facility from the ground up means every detail has been thought out to cater to visitors with high expectations for health and wellness, in one of the areas in the country that most puts a premium on it.
That means it’s not just a spa—it’s a three-part, 12,000-square-foot comprehensive wellness hub designed to be done as a circuit for maximum impact. Starting at Fieldhouse, the movement studio, guests can hit the gym, take indoor and outdoor group classes, or get specialized training and fitness assessments. Afterward, post-workout recovery happens in Springhouse, using heat, cold, steam, and micro salts to activate the body’s natural healing processes. Finally, at Halehouse, guests can choose from a broad range of treatments integrating top sports science and energy healing, from physical therapy to lymphatic-drainage massage, chiropractic services, and skin care.
What’s the vibe?
Spare, elegant California luxury—warm neutrals with natural accents like oak and rattan. There’s a special cloistered-away feeling, far from the din of main roads and highways, that no other Napa spa can likewise claim. A world away from the windowless spas of yore, it manages to seamlessly bring in the outdoors: Each building in the Halehouse compound boasts stunning vistas of the property’s rolling hills (across which 78 airy cottages and guest rooms are spread), with glimpses of the broader Napa and Sonoma valleys beyond. The heated outdoor spa pool and hot tub offer particularly jaw-dropping unfettered views. There’s also, it should be noted, an undercurrent of seriousness to the facilities that feels slightly daunting, with a sense that it’s not quite for spa beginners or those who want to just have a fun, restful day—the super-friendly staff, however, are on hand to talk you through everything.
The history?
Opened in April 2022, the 712-acre Stanly Ranch is located among towering eucalyptus trees, grazing cattle, and winding walking and biking trails on the site of a historic working ranch. The hale in Halehouse refers to the word meaning “health” (as in hale and hearty) and also the root of “inhale” and “exhale,” as many of its activities and treatments are centered on breath. Wellness director Yalda Teranchi tells me the spa strove to stand out amid a crowded Napa Valley field: “We don’t do grapeseed or anything like that,” she notes, referencing a cliché among the area’s spas to incorporate a taste of the wine region. “We wanted to make our own way.”
What should you try?
The Springhouse circuit should not be missed. It’s a gorgeously designed airy co-ed space (limited to eight people at peak periods to ensure tranquility), and the massive undulating cedar sauna is a stunner, overlooking one of the ranch’s vineyards through floor-to-ceiling windows. Besides the cedar sauna, tepidarium, salt-therapy room, and steam room, there’s a hyperbaric oxygen chamber, lymphatic rolling machine, and cold plunge bath (all for a fee). If the indoor cold plunge isn’t cold enough for you, they’ve added even colder baths with ice water in steel tubs al fresco, in response to guest demand. (Do you even cold plunge, bro?) Esker body scrapers stand at the ready to kick your exfoliating up a notch.
How environmentally friendly is it?
That’s just not the main focus here: They provide metal and bamboo water cups, paper straws, and, in the restrooms, washcloths in lieu of paper towels.
What else do we need to know?
Halehouse offers bone broth, in addition to tea and water, because California.
