Hollywood costume designers had a stellar year. In 2019 we were blessed with a gaggle of brilliantly dressed movie characters, encompassing every cinematic genre you can imagine: satire, thriller, and biopic to name a few. And that all bodes very well if you’re in the market for scene-stealing Halloween style. Though it won’t be released until the holidays, Greta Gerwig’s Little Women has already whet the appetite of fashion-conscious moviegoers with a trailer that’s brimming with prairie dresses and Victorian-era silhouettes of the kind championed by labels such as Batsheva and Dôen. But it really all began with Quentin Tarantino’s long-awaited Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood. The moment that movie’s poster art hit social media this spring, fashion lovers were heralding the return of the Hawaiian shirt and bookmarking the turtleneck sexiness of the late Sharon Tate for future reference. Much like this year’s Elton John biopic Rocketman, the film was an epic vintage fashion feast for the eyes.
Beyond rocking our world, the best films of 2019 took us to unexpected places for Halloween inspiration, mostly notably a Manhattan strip club. Hustlers saw Jennifer Lopez at her career best with a terrific wardrobe to match. The collection of juicy tracksuits, Louboutins, and fur coats she wears is early 2000s nostalgia at its finest and enough to make Paris Hilton weak at the knees. Even the horror flicks gave great costume: the red jumpsuit worn by Lupita Nyong’o in Jordan Peel’s second film Us and Midsommer’s Swedish countryside cult-leader chic were both standouts.
Luckily dressing the part won’t require much fuss or high dramatics, since this year memorable movie style happened to be totally wearable. In other words, don’t be surprised if you find yourself marching your new Sharon Tate–inspired white go-go boots all the way into the spring.
