Ahead of Valentine’s Day, a Look Back at 15 Sweet Hearts on the Runway

Money can’t buy you love, but it can buy you a romantic dress from Versace or Gucci. This Valentine’s Day, trade the lace and silk for a more literal interpretation of desire: the simple heart print. The coy motif has appeared on the runways for years by way of dizzying designs; embellished embroideries; statement costume jewelry; and, in the case of Gucci’s Spring 2019 collection, a representation of the anatomically correct human heart. Alber Elbaz often used hearts in his playfully feminine collections for the house of Lanvin, as has Dolce Gabbana. And let’s not forget the most over-the-top example of a fashion valentine: Hedi Slimane’s heart-shaped red fur for Saint Laurent’s Fall 2016 show, made Insta-famous by Rihanna.

In anticipation of February 14, here’s a look back at some of the sweetest signs of adoration to ever come down the runway. These are the heart designs we love to love.
