You’ve done the boat shoe, you’ve exhausted the loafer. So what’s next? This fall, we’re making the case for a fresh take on a familiar favorite: the derby and the brogue. A menswear mainstay, designers and street style stars alike have shown us that the best brogues and derbies for women can be styled in invigorating and unexpected ways, and we’re here for it.

If you’re wondering what exactly sets a derby, oxford, or brogue apart from, say, any other loafer, the answer lies in the laces. A loafer, by definition, is a slip-on shoe, while the derby and oxford are laced up styles (featuring “open” and “closed” lacing systems, respectively). And a brogue? That refers to those decorative perforations you can find on both derbies and oxfords, lending an even more traditional look. Whichever style you choose, it’s all about finding a favorite pair to wear your own way.

The style was definitely trending on runways this season. The slinky dresses and menswear-inspired separates at Victoria Beckham and Calvin Klein were paired back to shiny derbies with no socks in sight, a masterclass in how the “wrong” shoe can look so right. Elsewhere, Michael Kors and Bally paired their lace-ups with pleated trousers, but added treaded soles and extra buckles to toughen up the overall look. Models at Michael Rider’s debut Celine show, meanwhile, slipped into slim, almost gym shoe-like versions in leather.

Whether you’re inclined to keep it classic in borrowed-from-the-boys brogues and timeless tailoring, or you’re looking to soften derbies by teaming them up with elegant skirts and dresses, we’ve gathered the best ones to show you how to style them this fall.

Dressed Down

It’s all about contrast when it comes to styling a more masculine shoe. When paired back to a body-skimming knit dress and high-shine accessories, a bold brogue feels especially witty.
