During winter, I have a hard time mustering the strength to get creative with my wardrobe. It’s cold and gray and I just want to be comfortable. Bless Emily Ratajkowski and Bella Hadid, who dress for the winter months in crop tops and light jackets as if it’s a perpetual 60 degrees outside. I just want to be warm. I tend to throw on the easiest uniform: heavy socks, boots, jeans, a big chunky sweater, and my Columbia snow boots. In my dreams, my roster of winter garb includes a knee-high, chunky lug-sole boot and military green long coat with a shearling collar, straight from Prada’s fall 2019 runway. Or, from that same season, a beautifully witchy textured dress or sharp suit and hiking boot pairing from Alexander McQueen.

But back to reality. If you cannot snatch a full look straight off the runways, how do you actually style clunky snow boots during the toughest—and seemingly endless—last few months of winter? The best answer is to have fun with it. Don’t think of getting dressed in a polar vortex as a chore. Whether you try out a pair of Merrell boots with a silky slip skirt and an oversized knit, or a sweaterdress, tights and a pair of slip-on leather boots, there are actually endless options for stomping out into the snow without sacrificing your personal style. Below, here are four ways to conquer those inevitable pop-up squalls on the horizon and to keep your fashion sense intact while doing so.
