The year was 1991, and there was a shift in the cosmetics scene. The bold makeup looks of the ’80s were being replaced with no-makeup minimalism. And leading the charge? Bobbi Brown.
In a stark contrast to the decade prior, the makeup artist spearheaded the “clean girl” aesthetic long before it was a thing. That year, Brown exploded onto the market with 10 brown-hued lipsticks, with the intention of enhancing her clientele’s natural beauty. Then known as Bobbi Brown Cosmetics, the brand debuted in Bergdorf Goodman in New York, before being bought by Estée Lauder in 1995 and becoming the worldwide sensation it is today.
In 2020, four years after departing from her eponymous brand, Brown returned to her roots to launch Jones Road with a mission to create clean cosmetics–much to the delight of her loyal fan base.
The latest launch from her Jones Road beauty collection is The Classic Lip, the brand’s first-ever lipstick. Before creating this formula, she explains, she forwent the product type entirely, claiming they were too dry and prone to creasing or bleeding. So what makes this formula different?
Jones Road The Classic Lip
- Why We Love It: Bobbi Brown has returned to her roots with a 12-strong shade lipstick collection, the first for her Jones Road label. She unveiled her original namesake label with 10 lipstick shades, but has taken a different approach with the formulation of this launch. The peptide and vitamin E-enriched product is nourishing and creamy when applied. The colorways lean towards variations of nudes with a few bold shades popped in to make these the kind of lipstick that you’ll want to keep reapplying, no matter the occasion.
- Texture: Super smooth, creamy texture
- Finish: Suede
- Shade Range: 12 shades
“It is the complete opposite. The Classic Lip features some really great ingredients like peptides and vitamin E that keep the lipstick moisturizing, lightweight and comfortable throughout the day”. She describes it to me as a “satin finish that is as natural as a lipstick finish can get, while being flattering on all lip types.”
It’s certainly creamy, gliding onto the lips with an element of nourishment that you don’t often find in pigmented lip colors. Which brings me on to the shade range. There are 12 shades, each one designed to work in tandem with its corresponding The Lip Pencil shade. “There are eight nude shades, based on the actual tones of people’s lip colors, and then there are four bold shades that can work on virtually anyone”, Brown reveals to Vogue. “You know my philosophy–always have one nude shade on hand that matches the exact shade of your lip to help enhance it just slightly when you want to look put together without the effort. From there, find a bolder shade that gives you an alternative look when you want to feel more dressed up.”
To maximize their longevity, the makeup expert recommends “layering The Classic Lip on top of The Lip Pencil. When worn together the two products are clinically tested to be long-wear and last up to eight hours”. She also stresses that they have lasting power without sacrificing on the formula, “Most long-wear formulas have poor ingredients in them – these formulas don’t.”
When it comes to application, she suggests “Start by lining your lips with The Lip Pencil, then use the flat end of the pencil to fill in your lips for a light, even layer. You can blot before layering The Classic Lip overtop if you want. I personally like to blot at the end to help seal it in, and so I’m left with the perfect finish.”
The new Jones Road lipstick provides an immediate wash of pigment that is lip-puckeringly nourishing, smooth and creamy. Not only that, but the finish is almost glossy. Bonus points go to the packaging, too, as the lid closes with a satisfying magnet. “The packaging feels very chic, just like the product does when you wear it,” Brown explains.
Rosewood is my favorite shade among the 12, a modern nude with pink-beige undertones that is equal parts natural and bold. I have worn it to the office, the pub, and in fact, I haven’t taken it off since it landed on my desk. And the compliments have been flying. Vogue’s beauty wellness editor called it “the shade of the season” and I’m inclined to agree.
