It’s the way many modern relationships start: “I slid into their DMs,” singer-songwriter Kacey Musgraves tells me of how she first started working with fragrance brand Boy Smells. Together, the duo created a best-selling candle inspired by the single “Slow Burn” off of Musgraves’s Grammy-winning second album, Golden Hour. Earlier this month, the singer dropped the first song off her much anticipated Deeper Well album—and as of tomorrow, it will have an accompanying Boy Smells candle of the same name, too.

“I thought the earthiness of the song would lend itself to a nice candle moment,” Musgraves says of the creative process of transforming music notes into fragrance notes. “All the song titles on the record would make really great candle names—I was torn between ‘Deeper Well’ and ‘Lonely Millionaire,’ actually. But this one really speaks to where I’m at mentally and emotionally right now.”

Apparently, that place is somewhere with lavender, clary sage, mushroom, eucalyptus, and beetroot—all notes of the green candle. It’s also a place that’s totally new for Musgraves. “I had a vision of somebody who smells really good after just coming in from the rain. You give them a hug, and it smells like them, but they also still have the outdoors on them.”

She also found inspiration for the candle in one of her “favorite scents:” Baccarat Rouge 540. “There’s a gourmand sweetness, maybe reminiscent of childhood. But what we ended up creating feels grounded and new.”

Boy Smells founder, Matthew Herman, calls the scent an “earthy gourmand,” adding that “it’s not gourmand in any traditional sense, but the beetroot, mushroom, raspberry, and saffron do add this yummy undertone. This contrast of nature and warmth is a category all its own, we don’t have anything like it.” Baccarat Rouge 540 meets the outdoors? The ultimate high-low.

Fragrance lovers will find Deeper Well’s scent throughout the Musgraves universe too. “When we were putting the vinyl packages together, we found out that you could do scented sleeves too.”

Reflecting on the new era that this album symbolizes, the singer is excited to share more than she ever has before.

“As I get deeper into my 30s and know more about myself, it’s just nice to be able to connect with other people that have gone through the same things that I’ve gone through,” Musgrave says. “Vulnerability is the ultimate form of freedom and connection, because you realize you are not alone. It’s such a blessing to be able to connect with other humans. Creativity, that’s what it’s fucking for.”

The second Boy Smells x Kacey Musgraves Candle, Deeper Well, goes on sale February 23rd.
