Kacey Musgraves is deeply embedded into tour life at the moment. Since April, the singer has been on her Deeper Well world tour—and this month, she invited Vogue along with her as she continue to tackle her North American leg. Making stops in Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and New Jersey, Musgraves has been busy bringing hits like “Cardinal” and “The Architect” to the fan-filled arenas. “So much work has gone into putting this show together,” Musgraves tells Vogue. “It is crazy to see what started as a small, tiny seed of a song expand into this multi-sensory experience; Getting to express yourself in such a big way, and the energy exchange between me and this crowd—I feel very fortunate to be able to do that.”
Of course, Musgraves has worn epic performance fashions for all of her new shows. The singer has found herself slipping into 36 different statement looks—one for each of her 36 shows in North America. “Each city is totally different,” says Musgraves of her approach to tour style. “We have some really fun custom looks coming.” Last week, Vogue asked Musgraves to document four shows and the stellar outfits she wore for them. Below, take in the singer s behind-the-scenes videos and photos, and explore as she walk us through her epic country-meets-glam wardrobe.
Night One
Date: September 4
Stadium: Bryce Jordan Center, Pennsylvania State University, Pennsylvania
The look: Alex Perry. “I love sparkle, and I love production,” says Musgraves. “I also love things that are very real and grounded. For me, it’s always about finding the right balance between something that feels authentic to me, and something that’s going to really put on a good show.“
Night Two
Date: September 6
Stadium: TD Garden, Boston, Massachusetts
The look: Norma Kamali. “It’s a fun, two-piece plaid set,” says Musgraves. “It was giving some Irish energy—so I went for it in Boston!”
Night Three
Date: September 7
Stadium: TD Garden, Boston, Massachusetts
The look: Balmain. “It’s all about finding the right silhouettes and fabrics,” says Musgraves. “I love th western paisley details—it’s basically taking a bandana print and magnifying it larger-than-life. There’s something really Texas about that. It’s comfortable and fierce.”
Night Four
Date: September 9
Stadium: Prudential Center, Newark, New Jersey
The look: Coperni and Good American. “I decided to wear a little bit of denim,” says Musgraves. “The top is Coperni, and we turned it into a bodysuit to go under these Good American shorts. I also got these new boots for Jersey tonight; They’re by Christian Louboutin, and they’re a mile-long. They’re just so Texas.”
