What does a tour through a former Spice Girl’s wardrobe look like? Well, if our recent visit with Geri Halliwell (a.k.a. Ginger Spice) is anything to go by, it’s a beautiful, chaotic, sequin-studded affair.
At Vogue’s prompting, Halliwell—who recently released a new children’s book, Rosie Frost and the Falcon Queen—took a look back at her most memorable looks, beginning with the Union Jack minidress that she famously wore to the 1997 Brit Awards. She recalls the showstopping moment fondly. “This dress is probably the most poignant reminder of, Follow your gut instinct,” Halliwell says. “At the time, the stylist said to me, ‘I don’t think you should wear that.’” (Thank God she didn’t listen!)
“America told me you’re allowed to think big,” Halliwell later reflects, poring over her 1998 American Vogue cover that she shared with the rest of the Spice Girls. Vivienne Westwood helped inspire Halliwell’s iconic Spice World corset, and it was Westwood once again who designed the dangerously high heels Halliwell wore to sing at the then Prince of Wales’s 50th birthday celebration. (For the fashion historians among us, they happen to be the same shoes Naomi Campbell once fell over in.)
You might be familiar with the green Versace dress that, on J.Lo, helped launch Google Images, but did you know that Halliwell wore it first? Or, indeed, that she had a cameo on the original Sex and the City? Those are just two of the pieces of Ginger Spice lore unearthed during Halliwell’s mini fashion retrospective; watch the full video for more.
