At New York Fashion Week’s fall 2023 finale, Luar designer Raul Lopez is bringing futuristic beauty to the runway. Backstage inside Brookyln’s Faurschou Foundation, hairstylist Evanie Frausto is adding another layer of Bumble and Bumble Bb. Gel to spiky black hairpieces that appear frozen by an icy gust, which he prepped ahead of the show. “Raul is all about drama,” Frausto says of the founder, a friend for years. “This collection is very sculptural with lots of feathers and sequins, so we played with hair that feels a bit punk and cool with these reflective windblown looks.” As a nod to Lopez’s Dominican Republic roots, Frausto creates a second look pulled tight at the sides with flexible Sumogel and rolled into what he calls a “sleek auntie” updo.

“It is really about Latin culture, it’s about heritage, but now it’s taken a ’90s futuristic spin,” says makeup artist Romero Jennings, riffing on the theme beginning with glowing skin. “I’m using the new MAC Serumizer, which makes everybody holographic 3D glowing aliens. Aren’t we looking at stuff in the sky?” he asks. “They’re here.” For contoured metallic lips, Jennings lines with MAC Lip Pencil in Stone topped by silvery Glitch in the Matrix eye shadow and finished with iridescent Dazzleglass gloss in Pleasure Principle.

Then there are the DIY lashes that Jennings customized by stacking MAC’s #7 Free Spirit Lash with Swarovski crystals and hand-cut paper for spiny, dangerous gazes. To temporarily erase arches (and let everything else shine), Studio Fix Conceal and Correct Palette is brushed with a spoolie through the brows of the models—with one exception: Mercy Sang, who Jennings says is “walking around with the skinniest Pamela Anderson sexy brows—she did it first.” And for everyone in Luar’s cast of models, Jennings has a hero product: “I’m using Extra Dimension Skinfinish in Show Gold, a highlighter that gives a really beautiful glow on cheekbones and light, medium, and deep skin tones—they’re all using the same one,” he says. “It’s universal—I guess we should say galactical at this point?”
