Okay, so it was a minimal evening on the hair and make-up front at the Oscars 2024, but that didn’t stop Lupita Nyong’o from giving the people what they wanted. At the Vanity Fair after-party, the actor served a sculptural hairstyle created by her longtime stylist, Vernon François.
After creating an “Afro fascinator” for the ceremony itself (with the help of Olaplex’s nourishing Bonding Oil to help define and bring out her natural curls and coils), François took Nyong’o’s hair to new heights—quite literally. Delicate locs were woven into her hair and arranged in a halo effect around the crown of her head. The majestic look was perfect for a night when all eyes are on you.
François and Nyong’o have long created hair magic together—at the Oscars and elsewhere. At the 2022 Academy Awards, Nyong’o wore a glamorous sisterlocks up-do that “drew inspiration from African figures in classical Greek art,” he told Vogue at the time. There have been others too. Take the Black Panther press tour, for which he conjured up the star’s head-turning braided crown. Not forgetting, of course, the cloud of afro curls she sported at last year’s Met Gala.

Thanks to that hair, paired with jewel-toned blue eyeshadow and a deep plum lipstick—plus swathes of Y2K glitter adding luminosity to her arms and décolletage—Nyong’o hit every beauty mark for the event. Bravo.
