In 1933, the very depth of the global economic depression, the Ingersoll-Waterbury watch company launched the first Mickey Mouse watch. Like so many other enterprises, Ingersoll was teetering on the brink of bankruptcy, but Mickey saved the day—upon its release, Macy’s sold 11,000 of these cartoon watches. They retailed for $3.75, and they proved remarkably sturdy. (We can attest to this: we actually own one of the original 1930s models, and it is still ticking—well, sort of.)
