Attendees of Marc Jacobs fall 2023 show had (far) less than the usual amount of time to register the beauty references that colored the evening’s storytelling—that by design, of course. Lucky for us, the center-separated, fried-meets-frizzed chops—the work of hairstylist Duffy—shouted their message, one in keeping with the show’s fast-paced format.
As noted by Vogue Runway’s Nicole Phelps in her review, the cadre of bowled shags that fluffed and bobbed down Jacobs’s 29-look runway called to mind 1982’s ever-iconic Blade Runner, or more specifically replicant Pris, played by Daryl Hannah. Rather than a simple nod to an ‘80s-imagined future, though, the hair teamed with the show’s expedited format and AI-penned show notes (thanks, Chat GPT!) to posit that a time of replicants and blink-and-you’ll-miss-it creative communication has already arrived.
Are wolf cuts and stylized mullets destined for a crisped, crimped evolution? The answer is likely no—but as the present continues to merge with a sort of future previously resigned to our imaginations, we must admit that anything is possible at this point.
