You know Kelly, as in the Hermès Kelly. And you’re friendly with Margaux, from The Row.
May we introduce you to Edith? The flagship bag from Adam Lippes’s debut made-in-France bag collection, Edith is already turning heads at Lippes’s appointment-only Fifth Avenue salon with her trim shoulder strap, hourglass shape, logo-less smooth calf leather exterior, and 18-karat gold-plated clasp closure.
The designer’s first foray into handbags has been a long time coming—the project began 18 months ago—but only because he was so focused on quality. “It’s what we’re trying to do with our clothing as well,” Lippes says. “It’s all the best mills, it’s all the best yarn people. We’re not coming from a business merchandising plan, we’re just trying to make beauty with what we do.”
Women with closets full of designer bags will appreciate the small collection’s fine details. “All of the hardware was custom-developed for us,” Lippes says, including the box calf Latch bag’s latches, which make a satisfying click. “That click,” he laughs, “took, like, 12 rounds.” Just as much care was taken on the interiors, which are lined in nappa or suede, and luxuriously finished, so they’re delightfully lightweight.
A soft pebble leather style with double zips (available in two sizes) dubbed Vacances for its casual style and a mini pochette with a chain strap round out the offering, which will only be available in his stores in New York, Palm Beach, and Houston. “I wanted to keep it elevated,” he says, “and it’s also a new project for us, it’s a test.”
Collection number two is already in the works, but don’t expect an endless scroll of bags. Lippes kept his late mother, an interior designer, in mind as he was developing the line. “I remember back when I grew up, she didn’t have a thousand bags. If it was practical, she’d keep it forever.” She’d approve of the Edith.
