Growing up in a STEM-oriented household, Melissa Morris developed a keen eye for precision, which is at the very core of her leather goods label, Métier. “When I founded my brand, I knew it had to be something that really reflects my vision around what I think luxury design is. For me, design is at the forefront, and at the core is either enhancing an experience or solving a problem.”
Morris’ interdisciplinary upbringing and dual degree in both business and sculptural design seamlessly blend with her creative vision, resulting in handbag offerings that fuse luxury with functionality. With an inherent understanding of the ever-evolving needs of the modern cosmopolitan woman, Morris crafts pieces that cater to the demands of those immersed in a fast-paced, always-on-the-go lifestyle.
Drawing inspiration from her grandmother, who she described as someone who embodied the elegance of Jackie O. and Katharine Hepburn, Morris underscores the value of being comfortable without compromise. Her grandmother’s influence navigated Morris’ style sensibilities growing up, and continues to shape her current design philosophy with Métier. “She once told me a story about Christian Dior, who never would have cut a dress for a woman out of velvet,” she says. “Because if she was going to the opera, she’d be sitting all night and the fabric would be crushed. And I loved the story that—it wasn’t just about creating something beautiful, but it’s the designer’s responsibility to think about the framework of what s needed, and then create.”
Morris’ wardrobe, curated with pieces from brands such as The Row, Cristaseya, and Attersee, is the very definition of dynamic dressing that seamlessly transitions from day to night. “That is what personal style is to me—it’s finding what makes you feel good.”
In Morris’ world, the interplay between comfort and chic forges a flawless fusion of elevating personal style to new heights. It’s all a mesmerizing dance, where the versatility of each piece harmonizes with the blissful comfort it imparts.
A Little White Dress is the New LBD
What I find is that when you’re the most comfortable is when you look the best. I usually am on the road and traveling basically every other week in a different country for the last four months, so I’ve become really good at the art of packing and sort of just bringing classic pieces that I can just mix and match in different ways and can easily change up. I bring this Attersee dress with me during my travels; it’s just so easy to pack and is so versatile I can wear it to a lunch meeting or a dinner. And, of course, my Métier Roma Mini Gotland.
A Crossbody Bag Is Your Best Friend
When I’m going to a meeting, I want to feel as relaxed and comfortable as possible. I wear these wide-legged trousers from The Row that are just so light and airy, and this top from one of my favorite brands of all time, Christaseya. And the bag, of course, is the Métier Market Mini Marrakech—it literally fits everything! I love to mix black and brown to elevate a look, so a lot of times, I ll wear these black jeans from Charlotte Gainsbourg for Zara, and I’ll often wear them with a black top and then wear this brown, tobacco-colored rusty belt with it and pair it with cowboy boots, and it s perfect. Like I love to mix neutrals, and I think mixing black and brown is so chic.
All-Black Wins for Work Events
I think the mistake is if you go and add too much boldness into an office attire, that is more or less meant to be more subdued for that exact reason, sometimes it can look wrong. But you can easily put a printed scarf and sort of tie it in a very chic French way around your neck, or add different bracelets and rings. When I have a work event, I like to accessorize with simple jewelry. As I’ve mentioned before, I like pieces that are very versatile, so I would typically wear this Khaite dress and pair them with these sandals from The Row. To top it off, I wear this plain gold chain that I wear a lot, and I think it adds just a perfect tint of shine.
An Every Day Staple? Classic Blue Jeans
This is my everyday look. I love this Christaseya cardigan and tank from Toteme. For shoes, I often go for flats, really. And these jeans are my favorite 501s. On days when I’m on the go, I wear a lot of vintage Levi’s, and I would recommend never looking at a size. If you go and see a pair, just try them on. You never know what will fit you.
A Perfect Day to Night Look
I like pieces that I can just mix and match. This off-shoulder top is again, from Christaseya, and I paired them with these trousers from High Sport. The shoes I’m wearing are from The Row, and I only wear flats. I just feel more comfortable wearing them, especially when going to an event or a special dinner after work. I don t feel comfortable walking in heels—and it shows. So I really only wear flats. I would sometimes wear a small kitten heel, but if you don t feel good in something, don t wear it.
