From Rihanna to Jennifer Lopez, These Were the Most Elaborate Manicures at the Met Gala 2023

Rewind a few years to Met Galas of days gone by, and manicures were merely a supporting act to the fantastical red-carpet ensembles. At the Met Gala 2023, however, this was far from the case. Nowadays, we are all nail fanatics. And, on the first Monday of May in 2023, we were blessed with some excellent inspo.

Jennifer Lopez’s matte French manicure (by her longtime nail artist, Tom Bachik) was punctuated with an embellished Chanel logo—Emily Blunt and Lizzo sported similar designs. Other Chanel motifs adorning nails included the camellia flower—an emblem of the Parisian fashion house— versions of which could be spied on both Rihanna and Miranda Kerr’s talons.

Alongside an array of monochrome manis, many paid homage to the chain and pearl detailing that Karl Lagerfeld often showcased on the runway, from Rita Ora’s pierced nails (complete with lengthy chains) to Kerry Washington’s dainty pearl embellishments. While Ora’s nails aren’t particularly wearable for day-to-day, we expect to see iterations of Washington’s being recreated before long.

Oh, and of course, it’s worth mentioning that even Karl’s faithful feline companion, Choupette, served as a source of nail inspiration on the red carpet. Doja Cat’s claws were quite literally that: claws. Reminiscent of a certain pampered pet, her nails curved inwards and under, for a truly purr-fect nod to Lagerfeld.
