MoMA’s annual Party in the Garden is a tradition on the party circuit. Not only does the evening signify that summer is on its way, but it also famously brings together many different segments of New York’s social worlds. The festivities began with a cocktail hour in the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller sculpture garden, where several modern-day Rockefellers—Justin, Indre, Ariana—accompanied their centenarian relative David to dinner. The patriarch turns 101 this month, and is still an avid supporter of MoMA and, apparently, its parties. Other faces in the crowd included Jeff Koons, Cindy Sherman, Yvonne Force Villareal, Vera Wang, and Michèle Lamy, as well as Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin. Helen Mirren admitted that she would be remiss to miss this annual party. “Coming from a country where it’s so difficult to throw a party outdoors where it so often rains, I’ve always found something quite magical about outdoor parties,” she said. “Plus, I love coming here to see the Kandinskys.”
Once the party moved indoors, it was time for the honorees. This year’s included collectors Amanda and Glenn Fuhrman, Sally and Wynn Kramarsky, and artists Brice Marden, Huma Bhabha, and Mark Bradford.
“This was one of the most wonderful evenings, and it was really about the artists,” said Laure Heriard Dubreuil. She has a point—sometimes in the midst of so many galas, it can be hard to keep sight of the actual cause itself. “Alors, now I want to go outside and see Robyn,” she added. Back outside, Robyn performed in the garden after dinner, where droves of the museum’s younger supporters packed in shoulder to shoulder and kept dancing until well after midnight.
“It’s so nice out tonight,” said Leigh Lezark. “It feels like summer is finally here.”
