I’m not a big napper, but if I was, I would nap in my earrings. For me, it’s that—honestly—it doesn’t even cross my mind to take everything off at night. Maybe I wear too much, maybe I’m lazy, maybe I’m crazy, but I find jewelry to be comfortable. And, I admit it. I sleep in my jewelry.

It’s probably wise to divulge that my daily jewelry—especially earrings—rarely skews large (or even medium). That’s not to say there’s a small amount of it: studs, huggie hoops, bangles, pendant necklaces, and on, and on. But believe me when I tell you: I was surprised (yes, surprised!) to hear a friend of mine say she took her engagement and wedding bands off nightly! And I was similarly buoyed to hear a jeweler friend tell me that she, too, hardly ever takes her pieces off to sleep. Really, only to cycle in the new or different options.

Editors and jewelers alike are divided if my jewelry-wearing etiquette is poor. I’m sure it would be pointed out how much my lobes are aging with each bad earring-filled pillow plop. How much more I should have my pieces serviced (that is: have a jeweler tighten a clasp, ensure a stone is firmly set, etc) in light of this divulgence?

For those firmly in my camp (and even those against), you may find it interesting that a specific sort of earring back makes sleep more comfortable. The flat backs take out the possibility of poking. Supposing none of this matters—and I really hope it doesn’t—I’m not sure I’d advocate sleeping in highly complicated, intricate pieces, or anything that’s too tight. The fewer necklaces worn, the less the possibility of tangling mid-rest. Fingers naturally swell at the end of the day, so chunky rings are probably worth taking off each night-I do actually do this (!), and watches can be heavy—and tick!—so good to leave them on the bedside table.

Below, some more ideas for the best nap jewelry to keep on regardless.
