Party season is upon us, and with it comes a lot of fashion-related decision-making. Outfit aside, a good hairstyle can be the making of a look. Hairstylist Neil Moodie, whose clients include Gemma Chan, Nicola Coughlan, and Jodie Comer, shares his top three party hairstyles to consider ahead of your next outing. Sequins optional.
Clean low ponytail

A clean, slicked-back bun or ponytail, worn low on the head, is a celebrity favorite for a reason: it goes with everything. Minimal, androgynous and often worn with a side parting, it’s a style that works just as well during the day as it does at night. How to achieve the look? “On damp hair, create a parting, then apply Oway Flux Potion to roots and dry the hair with a paddle brush to flatten the style,” says Moodie. “Mist hairspray generously then comb back into a low ponytail.” For a cute added detail, secure it with a ribbon.
Half chignon
A style that sees the hair “wrapped, bun-style at the back of the head,” this chignon is an informal answer to the more traditional up-do. Inspired by the hair Moodie created for Gemma Chan to attend Louis Vuitton’s spring 2024 show in Paris this year, it’s versatile, easy to create, and great when you’re feeling indecisive. Moodie’s top tip for making it work for you: “Spritz a generous amount of Sam McKnight’s Cool Girl Spray through roots and mid-lengths for ultimate texture, and leave a few ends out of the chignon to spike out.”
Wet-look hair

How to make wet-look hair work for party season? The key is in the high-shine finish. “This is a style that looks best when it’s super shiny, and it works on all lengths—from pixies and bobs to longer cuts,” Moodie says. Requiring little skill, all you need is to apply a prep product, like L’Oréal’s Pli, and use a brush to create knot-free hair. “Once you’ve slicked it back, dry the hair, then apply hair gel, section by section.” Dry it off with a hairdryer and allow it to stay put until your next wash.
