Independence Day is traditionally thought of as a time to celebrate America, but pro-choice protestors in New York City proved on Friday, July 1 that it can be an equally effective time to protest the overturning of Roe vs. Wade—and the ensuing loss of reproductive autonomy for many—in a country that supposedly values freedom for all.
Photographer Lili Kobielski was on hand to capture the group’s march from Washington Square Park down Broadway to Foley Square, telling Vogue: “The scene was intimate but vocal to start and steadily grew in size as the night went on. I was struck by the age range of women protesting, from young teens to women in their seventies or eighties.” See all of Kobielski’s photos from the event below.
