The first Dyke March took place before the LGBT March on Washington in 1993, when groups including ACT UP, Puss n’ Boots, and the Lesbian Avengers gathered more than 2,000 people to make their way to the National Mall. Ever since, the Dyke March has become a staple of Pride celebrations in New York City, and this year was no exception; on Saturday, June 26, thousands took over Fifth Avenue to meet, mingle, flirt, kiss, protest, and shout “abolish the police” (in a nod to the event’s long-standing policy of not seeking an NYPD permit).
The day’s events culminated—as they so often do—with a joyous, music-filled, and extremely chaotic romp through the fountain at Washington Square Park. Below, take a tour through photographer Yael Malka’s vision of this year’s Dyke March.
