It’s that time of the year again—the grand finale of awards season, which, after the Golden Globes and SAGs and BAFTAs galore, finally reaches its climax tonight on ABC (or wherever you’ve managed to stream it). Somewhere out there in the big wild western side of this fine nation, Hollywood’s best and brightest have already strutted their stuff down the red carpet with hopes of eventually collecting their various accolades from the Academy at the other end.
The host of this year’s Academy Awards, Jimmy Kimmel, a first-timer to the Oscars, if not to hosting, exactly—he’s hosted the Emmys twice (2012, 2016), the ESPYs in 2007, the American Music Awards an impressive five times, and his own ABC late night show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, for 14 years. But none of that is quite the same as the famously fraught job of hosting Hollywood’s biggest night. “Yes, I am hosting the Oscars. This is not a prank,” Kimmel tweeted shortly after the news was announced in December. “And if it is, my revenge on @TheAcademy will be terrible sweet.” Luckily for all involved: the big monologue was a hit.
Kimmel won’t be the only entertainer onstage tonight: Justin Timberlake, John Legend, Sting, and Lin-Manuel Miranda—who (swoon!) joined the great tradition of taking his mom as his date, and in blue ACLU ribbons, no less!—are all scheduled to perform.
As for the films up for top honors, it’s anybody’s guess. (We made a few late last week, in fact.) Will the hype catch up to La La Land? Will all of the nominees be allowed to attend the ceremony? Will everyone make a political speech? Tune in (and follow along at Vogue.com for up-to-the-minute coverage) to find out—we’ll be updating the list of winners here as they’re announced.
