Never before has a summer getaway seemed so essential. After months indoors, a COVID-safe vacation can restore a sense of peace and happiness to one’s life—and Paco Rabanne has just the wardrobe for it. The brand’s new summer capsule collection of thin ribbed knit separates and tie-dye tees is suited to reemergence life, with sun-kissed colors and a loose, freeing silhouette.
Creative director Julien Dossena has produced several summer capsules before, as well as runway collections that hinged on the carefree spirit of a summer holiday—his spring 2019 collection of eclectic slips and second-skin knit tops was, I promise you, the wardrobe of Vogue’s offices during the summer of 2019—but this summer’s collection hits a little different. “Maybe it’s going to be difficult to let go of comfort and ease,” he says of thinking about dressing for post-pandemic life. “It’s an interesting moment to think about designs with the same edge and sharpness, embodying strength, and at the same time that carefree sensuality and effortless behavior.”
Dossena’s solution was to look to California for inspiration, channeling surfer vibes and sunsets into his collection. “I thought about it as a precise lifestyle moment. I wanted a wardrobe for this special occasion that is summer holidays so it had to be comfortable, body-conscious, easy, and matchable,” he says. “To catch that attitude, I looked back at those optimistic moments in the ’70s in California. West Coast colors, warm, and sporty all lit by a golden hour sunset.”
It’s up to you to find the perfect sunset for your summer travel. But once there you’ll know just what to wear. As far as travel advice goes, Dossena is hoping to spend the summer with his friends and family on the French seaside surfing, “then a little bit of countryside, and a Mediterranean island to finish.”
