“London has always been a melting pot of styles and cultures, especially when it comes to fashion and beauty,” makeup artist extraordinaire Pat McGrath said backstage before the Vogue World: London show. McGrath, fellow artist Jenna Kuchera, and her makeup team was tasked with creating the hundreds of makeup looks—exaggerated winged liner, pastel blue smokey eyes, and more—all with a distinct Anglo flare.
For the night, there were three discrete beauty genres: Punk, New Romantics, and Sweet Dream. “Each look has its own essence and flavor, but what they all share is an audacious attitude and a flair for the theatrical—much like London itself,” McGrath explains. Her own brand, Pat McGrath Labs, was used backstage, coinciding with the global launch of its 2023 holiday collection. “My inspiration is a blend of Blitz Kids, early obsessions, the street culture of Soho s Blitz clubs, and iconic fashion photography like Jessica Stam’s i-D cover. I wanted to channel the eclectic and daring spirit of those eras while making it modern.”
While McGrath is the reigning queen of runway beauty (she has hundreds of shows—Prada, Anna Sui, Schiaparelli, and more—under her belt), the artist acknowledged that Vogue World: London was a special project. “An event like this is more about individualism, compared to a runway show which often calls for a unified theme.”
