We created PhotoVogue Festival Echoes to allow those who participated in the event to contribute their voices to the Festival s narrative. During those days in Milan, we recognised our community s desire to come together and draw inspiration from each other s works. We highly value the sharing of experiences and practices, firmly believing that providing dedicated space to each artist can appropriately acknowledge the outstanding projects exhibited in November at the PhotoVogue Festival.
The 5th episode of PhotoVogue Festival Echoes is dedicated to Daniel de Jorge, who presented his work ‘Andalusian female look’, as part of the exhibition “Spanish Women: A contemporary Portrait of Strength and Beauty”, with the results of the Local open call made in collaboration with Vogue Spain and PHotoESPAÑA.
The artist curated a selection of photographs he took throughout five years, documenting the multifaceted representation of women in south Spain. His aim is to reflect in his work the interwoven stories behind the portrayed subjects and the rich cultural tapestry of Andalusia.
What is your favorite memory of the PhotoVogue Festival 2023?
I found really enriching when some people saw the work and gave me new impressions about the images, or were curious about the culture.
How did you come up with the project “Andalusian female look”?
It s been an evolution of years that I ve been documenting different popular manifestations around Málaga, Andalucía region on south Spain, where my family comes from. I dug into my archives and found a selection of my documentary works over Málaga from the past five years highlighting this female presence that has a crucial relevance to my work.
Could you tell us the story behind one of the portraits you made?
I was on Feria de Málaga, (the biggest "Fiesta" that occurs yearly in August) and saw this wonderful old woman, Gladys, while she was dancing with her husband. I was amazed by her energy so I ask her for a portrait. I think that this portrait enlightens all this powerful energy and her natural joyfulness and charm at their best.
Is there an upcoming project you are working on?
I m thinking about making a solo show and a publication about all this documentation at some point, but for now I keep going to different celebrations that catch my attention, always being surprised by something new.
