The 2019 Pre-Fall collections kicked off on a high-impact note at Valentino, where Pierpaolo Piccioli, with the help of makeup extraordinaire Pat McGrath, sent a cast of fresh faces down the runway with red and onyx feline flicks at eye level, baby blue pouts, or, in a lesson on why sometimes more is more, both. Ever since that extraordinary spectacle last month, other designers have followed suit, offering up a bevy of beauty statements that will guarantee all attention will, in fact, be kept above the neck (no matter how tempting it may be to steal a glance at Natacha Ramsay-Levi’s new ’70s-esque snakeskin boots at Chloé).
Case in point: Teal pigment was painted atop lids at Carolina Herrera; swipes of lilac and silver cat-eyes sparkled at Altuzarra; and inky graphic strokes gave a futuristic spin to the Ancient Egypt-inspired ensembles at Chanel. On the hair front, there were Preen by Thornton Bregazzi’s waist-grazing twin plaits, and cropped cuts that let statement earrings shine at Givenchy. Both Burberry and Thom Browne got creative with their trimmings, using a silk scarf and a red, white and blue ribbon, respectively, to add a flourish to pulled-back lengths, while, in Paris, long the capital of devil-may-care manes, Chloé made the case for running a brush through a head full of waves.
