Welcome to Vogue’s first-ever spa guide—a compendium of the 100 best spas worldwide, pulling from the expertise of our global editors. There is a lot out there in the world of wellness, and we are here to sort the cryo from the cold plunge, the infrared light treatment from the IV infusion. Or if your path is a more holistic one—there’s something for you here, as well.

Why go here?

With locations in New York City and Los Angeles, Remedy Place offers a way to relax, heal, and detox even if you can’t escape the urban grind. Remedy Place calls itself a “social wellness club”—meaning you can book treatments alongside family, friends, or even a date.

What’s the vibe?

Save for the green leaves of an olive tree, the interior of Remedy Place New York is completely gray. The space’s monochromatic scheme isn’t a style statement. In fact, it’s the opposite. In color psychology, the ashen shade represents neutrality and balance—which also happens to mirror the ethos of Remedy Place.

There’s no gym equipment, massage tables, or beauty offerings at Remedy Place. Instead, there’s an extensive array of holistic treatments. Facilities include an infrared light sauna, acupuncture and cupping rooms, cryo chambers, hyperbaric chambers (they’re different!), and ice baths, just to name a few. Some experiences are solitary, but many can be done with friends. For example, those aforementioned ice baths are offered in group classes, where an instructor guides attendees through 10 minutes of holotropic breathwork followed by 6 minutes submerged in 38-degree water. Meanwhile, the vitamin IV suites are arranged so two people can sit facing each other while taking intramuscular B12 shots. “The most important part of self-care is human connection,” Remedy Place founder Jonathan Leary says. “People need authentic relationships.”

What’s the history?

Founded by Leary, Remedy Place is a “social wellness club.” (Let Leary himself define that for you: “It’s a club that is temptation- and toxin-free, that enhances health and social life at the same time.) The first Remedy Place opened in West Hollywood in 2019, developed while Leary, who has his doctorate in chiropractic and alternative medicine, was a concierge doctor in Los Angeles, catering to those seeking a nonsurgical approach to chronic pain rehabilitation. That outpost drew an impressive crowd that included everyone from Kacey Musgraves to Rita Ora to Sean White—even creating a pop-up at Kourtney Kardashian’s home. A second opened in 2022 in Manhattan’s Flatiron District.

What should you try?

As mentioned, this is not the place if you’re looking to try the latest exercise class or get a deep tissue massage. It is, however, the place to go if you are interested in trying science-backed alternative medicine: An FDA-approved compression suit is used for lymphatic drainage, whereas a whole-body cryo chamber promises to reduce inflammation. Corral a few of your friends to take the (literal) plunge in one of their icy baths. Meanwhile, those looking for a hangover cure can opt for one of their many IV treatments.

How environmentally friendly is it?

Remedy Place avoids synthetics and plastics: There are reusable water canisters, and the room is scented through biodegradable cork fixtures painted with essential oils. Meanwhile, there’s a wide embrace of LED and natural light, lowering Remedy Place’s energy consumption and CO2 emissions.

What else do we need to know?

Leary hoped to devise a public space where anyone could explore alternative treatments for their health. In that spirit, Remedy Place also offers functional medicine consultations, where a trained medical professional examines factors like diet, genetics, and lifestyle components when treating pain and illness.

Who can go?

Visitors can book à la carte services or, if they wish, opt for a membership, which offers a package of treatments each month. (Memberships at their Flatiron location start at $350 a month.)
