Not only does Rokh designer, Rok Hwang take pride in finding the beauty in imperfection, he’s built his entire brand around the very concept. “We often start the design process by draping fabric on the body or through fabric experimentation,” he explains to Vogue—likening this method to working in a laboratory. “We cut, dye, twist, drape, sew, and recut in an endless cycle of experimentation to uncover beauty. Even when a drape accidentally tears during a fitting or the print goes awry, there are occasions in the atelier when we spot unexpected beauty and wish to capture it.” The South Korean luxury label founded in 2016 is revered by most for its deconstructed details and pristine tailoring. But as of late, Rokh is capturing the attention of the style set by teaming up with popular Japanese retailer, GU on a collection of elevated essentials, available today, October 18th.
For those not yet familiar with Japanese clothing company GU—Uniqlo’s younger and more affordable sister brand founded in 2006—its elevated wardrobe essentials can be seamlessly integrated into one’s wardrobe, regardless of personal style. In turn the speedy retailer has acquired both a loyal audience over the years, as well as what Hwang calls a unique standpoint in the market that the designer finds inspiring. Hence GU and Rokh’s collection was born—an edit of 16 pieces priced between $25 and $100 that can best be described as a reinterpretation of the classics, including everything from artfully-tailored trousers with A-line skirt overlays, to split-sleeve cable-knit sweaters and a generally muted color palette, that gives a more traditional feel. Also on offer are an assortment of oversized scarves with a timeless checked, plaid print with the power to instantly smarten up your cold-weather wardrobe.
From the clothing and accessories featured in the line to the styling and visuals, Hwang had a clear goal and vision for the collaboration, which he describes as artistic, humorous, and playful. According to the designer, the goal was to weave these three elements throughout all aspects of the collection, ensuring they seamlessly connect every aspect of the project. “I set out to design this collection as a distinct concept and creation, separate from my own label, introducing a fresh direction.”
As for Hwang’s favorite styles in the lineup, he says choosing just one is delightfully challenging. “I find myself in love with every piece,” he says. “The bomber jacket adorned with zips, alongside the two-piece coat, stand out as my top picks, perfectly encapsulating the GU identity with a signature Rokh twist.” Outerwear aside, the designer calls out the metal-strap detailed Mary Jane shoes as another must-have.
