There are a handful of celebs who defy staid red carpet rules on the regular. On these women, you won’t find traditionally glitzy, Old Hollywood-type gowns. One of said stars is Rooney Mara. The actress and Vogue cover star has developed her own distinctive style, often favoring a stark monochromatic palette and sculptural silhouettes. At the Animal Equality s Inspiring Global Action Los Angeles Gal in Beverly Hills last night, she mastered the art of the unexpected yet again, breaking out a new fashion idea all together: the red carpet harness.

For her appearance, Mara chose to wear a faux leather style by Hiraeth, the vegan fashion label she recently co-founded. She styled the piece overtop a crinkly, long-sleeved dress in pristine white. While we’ve seen the harness begin to trend in a more casual context, where It girls have layered them up with T-shirts and jeans, this provocative foray into the red carpet world à la Mara is a first—and it works. To offset the severity of the look, the actress chose simple ankle-strap sandals; she wore no jewelry either.
