There’s been a colossal-size topper floating around the fashion ether lately. Simon Porte Jacquemus dreamed this outrageously large sun hat into reality for his Spring 2018 La Bomba collection, and thanks to a sultry Instagram from Bella Hadid, a street style photo from the London menswear shows, the coolest bridal look ever from model Emma Leth, and, of course, plenty of style blogger hype, it has quickly become the summer’s most major accessory.
It is, however, a whole lot of hat. Extra is probably the best way to describe it. One would be remiss not to acknowledge the difficulties of wearing such a thing in real life: the injuries it might cause with the slight twist of your neck on the subway, a stumble forward on the beach or the sidewalk due to its blocking of your periphery. Yet it can be done with care and will shade your face—maybe even your entire body—from the damaging UV rays.
Jacquemus’s statement piece may be leading the charge in the humongous hat game, but it’s not the only player.
