When Sofia Richie Grainge was invited to this year’s Met Gala, there was no question that she would be attending with Tommy Hilfiger–with whom she launched a capsule collection earlier this year. “It was such a no-brainer,” she told Vogue a day before the first Monday of May. “I’ve had such an amazing year collaborating with Tommy and his team. This really felt like the cherry on top.”
While sharp suiting might have been an obvious choice for the dress code, “Tailored for You,” Richie Grainge wanted to ensure her look was in keeping with her own personal style. “I definitely made sure to honor the theme, but I also stayed true to what makes me super comfortable, which is wearing something sleek, something a bit more fitted,” she explains. “I stayed very true to myself.”
Working closely with Randy Cousin, Tommy Hilfiger’s SVP, runway and collaborations, Richie Grainge and the team decided upon a custom white gown featuring an oversized dandy-inspired bow at the back. The high neckline, meanwhile, is a nod to the classic cumberbund. “[It’s] very elegant, which is what I wanted the dress to feel like,” she continues, “but we went with a really big and fun bow on the back, because it’s the Met.”
Richie Grainge kept her beauty pared back on the night (“simple, natural, clean make-up, which is where I feel the most confident”) while wearing her hair in a sleek bun to complement her tailored dress. As for how she prepared in the run-up? “First and foremost, I need to have a good night’s rest, because there is nothing cute happening over here unless I sleep,” she says. “I make sure to hydrate a ton the day of any event.”
While Richie Grainge has attended several Met Galas in the past (“My first Met was such a surreal experience,” she recalls), getting ready for fashion’s biggest night out will look slightly different this year, as she will have her 11-month-old daughter, Eloise, in tow. “It will definitely be more chaotic with baby, husband and everyone running around,” she explains. “But that’s how I like it these days–I’m looking forward to the chaos.”
