In an industry where fall collections are shown during the spring and spring during the fall, each season feels like a time capsule into the future. And with eyes on the runways, anticipating the trends that will determine how we dress (and shop) come seven months from now, the pieces shown last September seem lost in a daydream. But lest we not forget that spring is around the corner, and our coveted accoutrements are now in stores. It’s time to shop!
Romantic practicality is in the forecast for spring 2023, with neo-minimalism, imperfect proportions, and utilitarian touches producing the perfect pairing of fantastical and functional accessories. Think bulky cargo pockets fastened to micro mini skirts, oversized raffia headwear shielding bikini-clad vacationers, or charming florals adorning sheer frocks. What was once a daydream is now a reality.
Reflecting back on the runways of last fall, shop our micro accessory trends that are sure to add a touch of charm to your spring wardrobe.
Reimagined Raffia
From French market totes to woven sandals, the natural texture and handmade feel of a raffia accessory embody the ease of summer style. Equally effortless with an elegant twist, this season, the classic straw sunhat is reimagined in extreme proportions. Taking cues from Max Mara and Jacquemus, we’re opting for oversized, wide-brimmed styles, all the while not dismissing the alluring height of Adam Lippes’ designs in collaboration with Esenshel.
Big Buckle Energy
From New York to Paris, and everywhere in between, the palpable energy of fashion month was intensified by that of the big buckle. Whether cinching the waist or barely hugging the hip in nostalgic Y2K fashion, the big buckle belt promises to have a hold beyond the world of the runway.
Romantic Rosettes
Although seemingly formulaic, florals for spring can still be groundbreaking! Three-dimensional rosettes, camellias, and anthuriums bloomed last September, turning stoic garments into walking gardens. No stranger to the floral motif, Chanel adorned the neck of model Rianna Van Rompaey with a satin camellia, whereas rosettes affixed to the chest added a DIY touch à la Prada.
Pockets Aplenty
A constant battle between form and function was at play this spring with a slew of pockets and pouches just at arms reach. The victor? Unclear. Rather, accessories seamlessly marrying the two dominated the utility-driven runways. On the front lines, Miu Miu tackled a denim peplum belt, while Ferragamo offered a hybrid double-bottle belt bag for all hydration needs. In their Resort 2023 lineup, Fendi transformed silk leg warmers, knit beanies, and sherpa vests into iterations of their beloved baguette bag.
Shades of Black
We’ve seen an upheaval of modern minimalism with oversized tailoring and simple silhouettes at the forefront of recent seasons, which can only suggest that a collective return to basics is on the horizon. Basic in nature, but by no means boring, the black-on-black sleek shade is our go-to finishing touch for any spring look. Prada, Saint Laurent, and Tom Ford were among the many designers tapping into the trend and concealing the identities of even the most recognizable faces in fashion.
