What sells out in fashion gets determined by an ever-changing mix of relevancy, popularity, emotion, and access. Bestsellers are built, not willed out of thin air, and the cycle is such that it takes time for trends and their key pieces to gain momentum, let alone prove any kind of staying power. Newness is always in supply, however, and what ends up defining a season is still in many ways nudged to the forefront by editors and buyers who are gripped by styles that speak to the moment.
The themes that resonate with us get compiled into seasonal trend reports, but what are the must-have styles for the industry’s top buyers? To answer that question, we tapped fashion directors from major online retailers and department stores to reveal the ready-to-wear, handbag, and shoe trends their teams are standing behind.
For spring 2025, there’s collective enthusiasm around Alessandro Michele’s debut at Valentino, as well as the introduction of a lighter color palette—notably, wispy pink, as seen at Khaite. Coastal prep and boho romanticism remain as relevant as they did last year. Buyers are of shared mind that polished loafers and soft, slouchy carryalls (preferably in suede) are tried-and-true investments, while customer favorites (think: Alaïa flats or Dries Van Noten sneakers) in trending hues add an element of now to one’s wardrobe.
Before the low-in-stock email hits your inbox—head buyers and fashion directors from your favorite places to shop weigh in on the key buys of the season—and their predictions for spring bestsellers.
Nordstrom
For Nordstrom’s VP, fashion director, Rickie De Sole, soft colors, decadent animal prints, and seaside-minded pieces set the tone for the season ahead. She’s looking to Khaite’s wispy pinks in an airy organza to embrace color in a “fresh and feminine way” and calf hair accessories from Valentino and Alaïa to “make a bold statement with an opulent twist.” Boat shoes are an easy way into the seaside look, which De Sole says is anchored by bold stripes in ready-to-wear, “with standout pieces including Proenza Schouler’s sailor pants and a deconstructed striped sweater featured on the Prada runway.” (Don’t miss the retailer’s exclusive Sperry collab, adorned with beading.) Those looking to invest in a handbag this season will find well-crafted carryalls that look and feel current, but still stand the test of time.
The Bestseller Predictions:
- The Soft Pink Touch: Khaite Norla long sleeve maxi dress, $980
- The Luxurious Calf Hair Bag: Valentino 9to5 genuine calf hair shoulder bag, $4,490
- The Preppy Boat Shoe: Sperry 2-Eye beaded boat shoes, $100
Net-a-Porter
The accessories department is where you’ll find many of Net-a-Porter’s top sellers this season. Kay Barron, fashion director of Net-a-Porter and Mr. Porter, points to Bally’s Pathy loafers as a must-have for those looking for a “fashionable take on the boat shoe.” The Pathy loafer was included in Net-a-Porter’s bestseller predictions last season, and seeing them here once more proves their staying power. (The brand recently added this caramel color to its lineup, which includes classic black, dark brown, and a hardware-embellished take.) Barron also calls out Dries Van Noten’s retro runners, which the retailer has picked up in a number of colorways for spring, from python to mesh to the below crisp white—there is something for everyone. Toteme’s belted tote, Alaïa’s criss-cross flats, and Bottega’s newest metal-rimmed sunglasses are styles that resonate, too, per Barron.
The Bestseller Predictions:
- The Minimalist-Approved Day Bag: Toteme belted leather tote, $1,340
- The Must-Have Sneaker: Dries Van Noten leather sneakers, $475
- The Edgy Ballet Flat: Alaïa criss-cross patent-leather ballet flats, $1,150
Saks Fifth Avenue
Roopal Patel, SVP, fashion director at Saks Fifth Avenue says customers are resonating strongly with the romanticism and glamour seen on the runways, from the lace-trimmed blouses and dresses to the ruffled minis. What makes these trends feel current for the season is their styling—at Saint Laurent, Roopal says creative director Anthony Vaccarello brought “glamour to life with soft suede bombers paired with long skirts, soft voluminous blouses, and lace and tiered ruffle skirts and dresses.” Similar tension was created at Loewe, where high-top sneakers were “pared back to printed chiffon floral volume gowns for that uptown/downtown flexibility.” Patel stands strongly behind the brand’s soon-to-launch high-top sneaker as an instant bestseller. (For those who simply cannot wait—Chloé has a high-top version of their own.) Patel rounds out her bestseller predictions by pointing to slouchy suede bags “which offer a fresh complement to so many of the bohemian looks for spring” as another must-have, plus polished loafers, which she considers to be “the new ballerina.” Her pick of choice? Saint Laurent’s Le Loafer.
The Bestseller Predictions:
- The Ruffled Dress: Saint Laurent ruffled dress in silk crepon muslin, $3,700
- The Lace Top: L’Agence Emmelina lace tieneck blouse, $350
- The Slouchy Suede Handbag: Prada Aimee medium leather shoulder bag, $2,950
- The Polished Loafer: Saint Laurent Le Loafer penny slippers, $995
Bergdorf Goodman
“Wardrobe building is always a mix of riding the trend moment, future-proofing wearability, and the excitement of the irresistible and emotional,” says Linda Fargo, SVP, women’s fashion and director of store presentation at Bergdorf Goodman. Using these guiding principles to inform her buying approach, she cites the bomber and the thong sandal as new icons for spring 2025. “Emotion-inducing romantic ruffles and ghosting sheers will be key, while suede is back for accessories!” As for what’s perfect of-the-moment? Mesmerizing fringe, forever slip dresses, and pencil skirts, she says.
The Bestseller Predictions:
- The Bomber Jacket: Dries Van Noten Vesto denim bubble hem jacket, $585
- The Thong Sandal: Bottega Veneta Marella leather thong slide sandals, $1,100
- The Mesmerizing Fringe: Proenza Schouler Yves stripe fringed knit dress, $2,490
FWRD
Elevated everyday staples, along with fabulous wedding guest wear, are a focus for April Koza, VP, at FWRD. Standouts include a shacket from Gabriela Hearst (“the most perfect suede shirt jacket with a western nod”); novelty denim from Valentino; The Row’s India bag in suede, and soft pink ballet flats—the criss-cross style, again!—from Alaïa. A sultry red mini from Magda Butrym, to be dressed up or down, rounds out Koza’s predictions list for the season.
The Bestseller Predictions:
- The Suede Shacket: Gabriela Hearst Irene suede overshirt, $4,250
- The Novelty Jean: Valentino straight-leg jean, $1,490
- The New It Bag: The Row India 15.75 bag, $4,950
Shopbop
Shopbop’s trend-savvy shoppers will delight in senior fashion director Caroline Maguire’s spring bestseller picks. Watch out for citrusy brights—reds, oranges, and yellows will bring zest to your wardrobe—sporty silhouettes (rugby shirts and varsity jackets), and maximalist styles. “Nautical-inspired designs ready to be worn and off the docks are here,” Maguire adds, calling attention to coastal-inspired picks from Kule, Janessa Leone, and Marni.
The Bestseller Predictions:
- The Bright Accent: Alémais Flame midi dress, $470
- The Rugby Top: Guest in Residence striped cashmere rugby, $495
- The Nautical Touch: Janessa Leone Tinsley straw hat, $287
Elysewalker
For Courtney Grant, senior vice president of buying at Elysewalker, spring brings about a uniform refresh that focuses on a key look: “jackets worn with novelty denim and a playful handbag.” She elaborates: “jackets this season are like Goldilocks: short but not cropped, boxy but not oversized,” emphasizing Khaite’s Saunder denim take or Miu Miu’s plaid zip-up shirt as “just right.” When it comes to denim, Grant says all eyes are on low-rise and flare silhouettes that have a nostalgic feeling, adding, “it’s the printed trim jeans from Alessandro Michele’s Valentino that stole my heart.” On the accessories front, Grant says the dominance of playful bags over the quiet luxury aesthetics of seasons’ past—highlighting Balenciaga’s keychain Rodeo or Valentino’s new suede silhouettes—“feel like a defiant, optimistic response to underlying global anxieties.”
The Retailer Predictions:
- The Hero Layer: Miu Miu check front zip shirt, $1,390
- The Statement Jean: Khaite Saunder jacket, $880
- The Fringe Effect: Valentino Nellcote crossbody bag, $2,690
Neiman Marcus
Jodi Kahn, VP of Luxury Fashion at Neiman Marcus echoes De Sole’s excitement around soft colors. “Dusty pastels will be the most important of the season!” she says, spotlighting an open-knit crochet sweater with a hint of sparkle from Italian label Brunello Cucinelli as a must-have. Equally notable for the season are fringe and raffia, two themes Kahn says can be easily pared back to city and vacation wardrobes. For those seeking new-season dresses, look no further than Ulla Johnson’s spring collection—key pieces featuring the bold Lee Krasner print seen on the runways have started to trickle in, with select styles available exclusively at Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman.
The Bestseller Predictions:
- The Statement Dress: Ulla Johnson x Lee Krasner Gaea abstract silk slip dress, $1,090
- The Fringe Skirt: Proenza Schouler Phia asymmetric faux leather skirt, $4,990
- The Touch of Raffia: Jacquemus La Pochette Rond raffia clutch bag, $1,090
