Street Style in Brooklyn: “Every Time I’m Walking Down the Street, I’m Like, ‘She Ate That’”

Street Style in Brooklyn “Every Time Im Walking Down the Street Im Like ‘She Ate That”

Fashion is self-expression. It’s one of the reasons why we love to people-watch, and one of the reasons why street style has become one of the defining photographic genres of our time. Few things are as inspiring as seeing the way people dress in their everyday lives (just ask Matthieu Blazy, who continually cites “the streets” as inspiration for his celebrated vision at Bottega Veneta).

Which is why we are launching a new street style series that looks at what people are wearing in the coolest neighborhoods in countries around the world. Last month, we tagged along as the photographer Dorian Ulises López Macias showed us around different neighborhoods in Mexico City. For this installment, we headed to Herbert Von King Park in Bed-Stuy and Fort Greene Park in Fort Greene, a great place to spend exploring on a sunny day. Here s what photographer Vivian Kim, who splits her time between Brooklyn, Hawaii, and Los Angeles, had to say about the borough.

“As a creative, New York, and more specifically Brooklyn, is the best place to be. Brooklyn was and is home to some of the world’s most celebrated artists; and this is reflected in both the history and current culture. Though Brooklyn is part of one of the world’s biggest cities, there is a softness to it that can be seen everywhere from interactions on the streets to its beautiful parks. I think what’s most beautiful about the community in Brooklyn is that in a place where everyone moves to to achieve their dreams, it’s understood that everyone has to start somewhere. People are understanding and helpful to each other, there for each other through the good and bad, and ultimately come up together. Some of my favorite spots in Brooklyn are Fort Greene Park, the track at McCarren Park, Baba Cool, Win Son, Samurai Mama, Paulie Gee’s, and all the streets around Prospect Park.”

“I moved here to go to school, I went to FIT and I lived in the Chelsea dorms, but once I moved to Brooklyn, I never really went back to Manhattan. I worked in Brooklyn, went out in Brooklyn, ate at restaurants in Brooklyn… so a lot of my New York City experience has been very Brooklyn. I’m in Ridgewood now, which is technically Queens, but you know, it’s on the border.”

“I woke up in a frenzy and just threw some stuff on. The necklaces are all my mom’s, and I like big baggy pants with a lot of pockets because I have a lot of things to hold — including this bag. I have like a hundred things in here.”

“I feel like in Brooklyn right now, a lot of us are trying to think about our consumption a bit more. Everyone is trying to figure out what makes them them and I think we’re trying to get a little more scrappy. Every time I’m walking down the street I’m like, ‘she ate that’, and then I’m like, okay, now what can I do?”
