Fashion is self-expression. It’s one of the reasons why we love to people-watch and one of the reasons why street style has become one of the defining photographic genres of our time. Few things are as inspiring as seeing the way people dress in their everyday lives (just ask Matthieu Blazy, who continually cites “the streets” as inspiration for his celebrated vision at Bottega Veneta).

This is why we launched a new street style series that looks at what people are wearing in the coolest neighborhoods in countries around the world. This summer we’ve checked out the Mexico City neighborhood of Roma and its surroundings; Bed-Stuy and Fort Greene Park in Brooklyn; and Harajuku, Tokyo. Recently we set off to the multicultural borough of Neukölln in Berlin with photographer Ryan Molnar. Here’s what he loves about this area:

Neukölln is inventive, avant-garde, and expressive. It’s home to so many artists, musicians, and creative people; there’s a very strong youth culture and artistic culture. Some of my favorite places here include the Side by Side vintage store, Isla coffee shop, Kitten Deli, Nathanja and Heinrichs, Tempelhofer field, the Landwehr Canal, and the Maybackhufer flea market. There are too many bars to count. I did an artist residency in Berlin in 2017 and fell in love with the neighborhood, and I’ve lived here since last year. I love its central location and walkability and also that there are so many trees and green spaces.

Christina, 33, Stepnogorsk
“Trends are interesting because they often relate to something of the past. I try to dig that up and repurpose it. I only wear vintage or secondhand clothes because I think enough clothes already exist in this world.”
