Suki Waterhouse Says ’70s Hair Is Not Just for Summer

As something of a queen of curtain bangs, Suki Waterhouse is used to inspiring major hair envy. And whether she’s on a stage at indie venues in London performing her viral hit “Good Looking,” or walking an international red carpet, she always maintains her signature “groupie” style.

Promoting her new film Broken English—a documentary about the late singer and actress Marianne Faithfull, who passed away earlier this year—at Venice Film Festival, Waterhouse debuted her shaggiest, most ’70s-inspired haircut yet.

The actor’s wispy, dirty blonde hair was worn loose and flicked ever so slightly inwards, and her artfully unruly bangs were styled in chunky, gappy sections, to allow her smoky eyeliner to peek through. It all harked back to her performance in Daisy Jones and the Six, which was set in the 1970s, a time when hair “was all about soft hot rollers and brushed out curls,” as celebrity hairstylist Adir Abergel previously told British Vogue when the show aired.

To try the look out at home, start by brushing out your roots, he said at the time. “Then bring out your hot rollers to create that airy bounce from the eyebrow to your ends.”

To go with her rockstar hair, Waterhouse wore a sequined Rabanne two-piece with sheer tights and chunky Mary Jane heels. The singer then jetted to Munich to perform at Superbloom Festival the very next day, styling her shag cut with fluffy bangs that fluttered outwards and complemented her bohemian white button-down dress.

The shag has had its moment this year: on the runways, we saw short, curly shags at Louis Vuitton’s spring show, and even shorter and more angled cuts at Stella McCartney, almost diamond-shaped and pointed at the nape of the neck. Things got more dynamic at Miu Miu and Loewe, while at Bottega Veneta, shag wigs were made of leather and metal. In the world of celebrity hair transformation-dom, there’s been a steady stream of revivers from Natasha Lyonne to Zendaya. It makes sense that the shag is having its second coming of 2025, now, with fall winter trends leaning into the golden-eras-gone-by, bold, and glamorous aesthetics.

And ultimately, you can trust Suki Waterhouse to usher in the nostalgic ’do of the season.
