When it comes to the first Monday in May, we know to expect the unexpected on the red carpet. But when Taylor Russell made her debut at the 2024 Met Gala, no one was surprised that the actor graced the famed steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Loewe.
Russell has been long been linked to Loewe and cemented herself as designer Jonathan Anderson’s muse when she opened the brand’s spring 2023 show in Paris. Since then she’s been a Loewe stalwart, earning a global ambassador title and a campaign. “When we work together, it’s always an incredible creative dialogue–she is an amazing collaborator and a very special friend,” Anderson tells Vogue of his collaboration with Russell.
Even if the duo’s reunion was to be expected, they still managed to pull out plenty of surprises for the big night, of which Loewe was a sponsor. Anderson looked to biomimicry for inspiration for the actor’s look. Russell wore a high-neck corset designed to resemble a wood marquetry pattern. She paired her trompe l’oeil top with a circle skirt made of a silk crepe marocain, which featured a thigh-high slit and draped waist.
Russell’s corset was 3D molded to fit her body perfectly and then printed with the wood pattern using a technique called hydro-sublimation, which the brand previously employed in its spring 2023 collection. “Playing with the senses is central to the experience of the exhibition, and we play similar tricks with trompe l’oeil in collections at Loewe, blurring the line between what’s real or surreal, what’s natural or unnatural,” Anderson says.
