If you’re not watching Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino’s Emmy-winning show, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, you’re missing out on an inspiring feminist story; rapid-fire wit (reminiscent of Gilmore Girls, the Palladinos’ other hit); a history lesson in 1950s New York; and, of course, some really great clothes. In season one, our protagonist Midge Maisel alternated between two style personalities: her well-to-do Upper West Side self, who wore nipped-waist dresses, couture-shaped coats, and kitten heels, and her after-dark self, a West Village comedienne who took the subway in skinny pants, black turtlenecks, and ballet flats. In her struggle to launch her comedy career while juggling two kids, a department store job, a possible divorce, and overbearing parents, Midge’s clothing became a huge part of the narrative—and for vintage fans, it also gave us lots of ideas for bringing those looks into 2018.
Season two premiered a couple weeks ago and introduced us to a whole new world of ’50s fashion: summer resortwear. Several episodes take place at a family resort in the Catskills (similar to the cringe-y setting of Dirty Dancing), where Midge trades her skirtsuits and cocktail frocks for sundresses, headscarves, mini shorts, high-rise bikinis, straw bags, and pedal pushers. If you’re going somewhere warm for the holidays, it’s all the packing inspiration you need—least of all because many of those items are trending again. And if not, Midge’s looks will at least inspire some serious wanderlust (or a bit of early spring shopping). Shop six of her best outfits, below, then revisit more of 2018’s greatest TV and movie fashion, including Mrs. Maisel and other binge-worthy shows to keep you occupied over the holidays.
