There’s no look more emblematic of the 1990s than the slip dress. The internet is constantly resurfacing iconic slip-dress moments, from Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell in see-through versions to Courtney Love and Amanda de Cadenet at the Vanity Fair Oscar party, to remind us of their sexy, undone appeal—and send us to our closets.
This little nothing of a dress, which has long since come out from under, has become a staple of contemporary wardrobes. It can be made of satin or chain mail and worn layered or sheer. Yes, there’s an aspect of lingerie dressing to a slip, but in its construction it’s a minimal garment. Its simplicity feels modern, but its allure is the way it connects the wearer to a vintage arc that extends from the soigné 1930s through the grunge and glamour of the ’90s to today.
