Tinashe’s Secrets for a Y2K Lip and Travel-Friendly Skin Care

Tinashe doesn’t sit still for long. As the singer prepares to spill her beauty secrets to Vogue, she lays the groundwork for what to expect: “I’m gonna walk you through my travel skin care and my everyday, on-the-go look,” she says. And with that, she’s off.

Tinashe’s skin-care regimen starts with BeautyStat’s foaming cleanser. True to the “Nasty” chanteuse’s quicksilver M.O., her skin care has evolved over time. “I really didn’t try for a lot of my life,” she confesses. “I didn’t really develop a skin-care routine till I was, like, 25.” Now seven years wiser, the 31-year-old follows her cleanse with Dr. Barbara Sturm’s Mini Hyaluronic Acid Serum; its “baby” format is not only cute but practical. “I am traveling; I can’t be weighed down,” says Tinashe, whose summer tour will take her everywhere from China to Tampa, Florida this month alone. After a dab of Relevant vitamin C serum and a smidge of Dr. Barbara Sturm Face Cream—from the travel-size jar, of course—the Kentucky native is ready to “move on.”

Tinashe kicks off her makeup routine with a swipe of L’Oréal Paris True Match foundation. “I feel like I don’t need a lot of coverage; this one is pretty sheer, and it matches [my skin] really nicely,” she says, swiping it on to demonstrate. Featherweight face base in place, Tinashe uses a touch of Urban Decay concealer, then warms up her complexion with Benefit’s Hoola Bronzer.

Next, it’s time for “a little Chanel.” Using the Stylo Sourcils pencil to define her arches, Tinashe describes her streamlined approach to makeup: “I’m pretty loyal to my few items that I love,” she says. However, “I will get some tips from the girlies on TikTok. Shout-out to the ’Tok—it made Nasty such a success.” Speaking of which, “I kind of have this nickname or persona in my mind, that I’m Nasty ’Nashe, ” she says, describing the alter-ego behind her infectious hit. After a bit of mascara, the hitmaker sprays on Mario Badescu Facial Spray, making a simple request of the classic product: “Get me dewier!” she exclaims.

Indeed, dew is integral to Tinashe’s go-to aesthetic. Though she dabbles in dramatic lashes and glittery eyeshadows onstage, her off-the-clock look is all about a “natural, clean” glow. “I keep it real simple,” she says. But, lest you thought the singer would wrap up her routine without a bit of “freak,” rest assured: Her lip regimen is where the freaky secrets lie.

“I think if someone really wants to match my freak makeup-wise, they need to use at least three lip products,” she confides. “But five is ideal,” Her routine starts with two lipliners—one from Make Up For Ever and a second one from Ilia. “I love an early 2000s, Y2K lip,” Tinashe confesses. She applies a coat of MAC matte lipstick for “general” coverage, then adds lip luster with YSL’s Loveshine Lip Oil Stick, NYX Butter Gloss, and SheGlam plumping gloss.

A spritz of Glossier’s You perfume comes last, along with a man-baiting tip: “Every time I wear this scent, men are like, Oh my God, you smell so good,” she says. “You heard it here first!” And with that, Tinashe is ready for a “nice, chill day”—looking quite the opposite of nasty.
