As the 76th Tony Awards loom—they’re now only nine days away!—several big questions remain. What will an unscripted ceremony look like? (More specifically, how will host Ariana DeBose do the thing with no writers?) How will the historic United Palace theater in Washington Heights hold up as a venue? And which Broadway shows will come away the big winners by night’s end?
While the odds-on favorite for best musical is David Lindsay-Abaire and Jeanine Tesori’s funny and affirming Kimberly Akimbo, starring the great Victoria Clark, Some Like It Hot is the year’s most-nominated production, with 13 nods across 12 categories. (Both Christian Borle and J. Harrison Ghee are up for the best-leading-actor prize.) Meanwhile, a startlingly good new Sweeney Todd, starring Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford, looks likely to take best revival of a musical—unless, of course, it goes to the timely and poignant Parade, with Ben Platt and Micaela Diamond.
Elsewhere in the field, Tom Stoppard’s sweeping Leopoldstadt and Amy Herzog’s adaptation of A Doll’s House, tied at six nominations each, are the favorites to win best play and best revival of a play, respectively, although the acting awards may well go elsewhere. Wendell Pierce gave one of the most celebrated performances of the season in Death of a Salesman, while Jodie Comer’s one-woman Broadway debut in Prima Facie has already won her a Drama Desk Award and an Outer Critics Circle Award.
All this is to say that whatever form the telecast takes, this year’s Tonys should not be missed—and neither should the shows they’re honoring. Here, we’ve gathered the 16 that you can still book now. Break a leg!
