The last time that Troye Sivan attended the Met Gala was in 2022. The singer and actor wore a black tank top dress by Joseph Altuzarra for his label Altu, which was paired with Rick Owens platform boots, Raul Lopez’s recently released Luar Ana bag, and a single leather bicep strap by stylist Mel Ottenberg as a cheeky nod to Robert Mapplethorpe. One of the most viral images of that night was of Sivan at the urinals, bag in one hand and dress pulled up in the other, taken by none other than Rihanna: “I think bumping into Rihanna in the men’s room was a standout moment,” Sivan said over Zoom ahead of his return to the Met steps tonight, “it’s something I probably won’t forget for a long time.”
Whether Sivan runs into Rihanna inside the Met remains to be seen, but he is excited to attend no matter what happens. “What I love about the Met so much is that people feel very empowered to play and explore and express [with fashion], which I think is really beautiful,” said Sivan, adding that the gala feels, in a way, “like a big wedding or something where no one’s allowed a plus one.” “People really put their guards down, because you can’t bring partners and managers, so you all just kind of have to talk to each other and you end up talking to someone that you’ve admired for many years. It’s just a very surreal experience.”
For the 2024 Met Gala, Sivan worked with Prada to create a look based on one of the brand’s most iconic menswear collections. “The way Marc [Forné, Sivan’s stylist] and I approached it, and the way in which it felt really exciting to us, was by thinking of ‘reawakening fashion,’” said Sivan, quoting this year’s Costume Institute exhibition “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.” “We interpreted it as an opportunity to look back at the Prada archives and find our favorite Prada moment and bring it back to life.”
The moment in question happens to be the Prada fall 2008 menswear show, which is, in this writer’s opinion, the Prada-est men’s Prada collection of all time. “It’s timeless and chic but also subversive and has a little wink to it,” said Sivan of the way in which Miuccia Prada perverted the menswear corporate uniform by hybridizing it with lingerie and bondage straps, merging sobriety with a sense of fetish the way only she could do.
Sivan’s look is a reinterpretation of look three in the collection, which seems innocent enough in the front, as a pair of charcoal slacks with a powder blue button-down. Except that the shirt opens in the back with a traditional placket, and is held together by two garter straps. “It’s classic while still being extremely sexy,” said Sivan. “It’s the most Troye Prada collection ever,” added Forné over the phone, “this look is very much Troye, meets Raf [Simons], meets Prada.”
This look is the cherry on top of Sivan’s partnership with Prada, including custom looks for both the Aria and Grammy Awards ceremonies earlier this year, plus, lest we forget his walk down the spring 2024 Miu Miu runway. “It’s truly one of the deepest honors of my life to work with them,” said the artist. “It’s been such a blessing for me. I love the team so much and Mrs. Prada I think is such an incredible boss, I’m in awe of her and the whole team.”
