Lori Hirshleifer s great-grandfather opened Hirshleifers over 100 years ago. What started as a Brooklyn-based furrier in 1910 has now evolved into a 25,000-square-foot luxury retail space in Manhasset, New York, and has become a fashion hub for loyal followers of Chanel, Saint Laurent, Balenciaga, and designer brands alike. The store is now run by fourth and fifth-generation Hirshleifers, Lori being among them. She has amassed her own following on social media for her impressive jewelry collection, consisting of stacks of bracelets, rings, and necklaces layered together. With her, there s never enough— more is more.
The retail store started carrying jewelry about 25 years ago, but only in the past 10 years has the jewelry department of Hirshliefers gained major traction, becoming a successful part of their business now. Lori takes our Zoom call from their new VIP jewelry room.
“We didn t carry jewelry for a really long time because we were more of a dress store when it was run by my parents." She explains, “We grew very slowly, but now it s my favorite place in the store to be because you could just play all day. It s so much fun.”
Lori has great taste and an eye for new talent in the jewelry space. Her Instagram stacks are always a good place to start for brand discovery. Here, we dive into the jewelry connoisseur s dream-like collection and learn about the art of the stack.
My everyday jewelry changes all the time because it s just about what I m in the mood for. Certain things stay on, like my Chrome Hearts bracelets— they don t come off; I sleep with those on. But generally, it s mostly yellow gold and always includes Hoorsenbuhs, Shamballa, and Spinelli. Currently, I added a coral cuff by Dezso... there s always Uniform Object somewhere—the feel and touch of his jewelry makes me smile. I wear my Sevan lock a lot, the emerald one, because it s my fave.
You just touch and feel and see what feels right to you. I say to myself, "Well, I need something else, or no, it’s too much; the colors don’t go." Then you have your classics that you always keep on, and some you change out. I guess it is an art! It comes naturally after a while. Just keep playing. It’s a passion, I love it. It makes me so happy.
[Laughs] Not long at all. I’ve got it down to a science. It’s worth it!
Dezso by Sara Beltran is one. We used to carry her pieces a long time ago, and we just got her back into the store which is very exciting. I love Prounis; her jewelry is amazing. I have a piece from her, and it’s so clean and perfect. She is such a talent.
My most special piece is my Snoopy. It’s a vintage Cartier necklace that my husband found. Actually, my daughter-in-law to-be found it, but he bought it for me on an auction site. We had a dog named Snoopy, a golden retriever, and I love Snoopy. So, I wear this every day!
A Cartier Crash watch. I’ve always wanted one, and I don t think that ll happen in my lifetime, but they’re incredible.
Right now, I’m wearing a Cartier Tank with diamonds on a green alligator strap. My go-to is really my Rolex green face Daytona. The John Mayer one. It’s my favorite.
I don’t really have a jewelry icon, but I think about this story I once heard about Daphne Guinness. My friend was in the South of France, staying at the same hotel as her and spotted her at the pool, just dripping in diamonds. She got up off her lounge chair in a swimsuit and full-on diamonds, and got right in the pool and swam. When I heard that, I thought, is there anything more perfect than that?
