They need no introduction: woven shoes are mainstays in a French woman’s wardrobe. While plaited and braided leather styles hold timeless appeal, they get reimagined every few seasons. That was the case for spring/summer 2025, when Jacquemus unveiled a new object of desire: a pair of intricately woven low-heeled pumps in various colorways, including an eye-catching bright yellow with black tips. At Stella McCartney, woven shoes took inspiration from caged heel sandals, envisioned as a towering pair in optic white, while at Gabriela Hearst, Fendi, and Chloé, we saw more practical takes for everyday with openwork leather ballerina and mule styles.

Widely beloved by a variety of French women, woven shoes have officially conquered our wardrobes this season. Mule-like or Mary Jane, flat or with kitten heels, they cater to every style and personal aesthetic. Brands such as Michel Vivien and Souliers Martinez have made them a core style in their lineups, regardless of seasonal trends. Is the braided shoe the ultimate essential to be added alongside sneakers and loafers? All signs point to yes, as long as it’s in leather rather than raffia, and preferably in a neutral shade (though don’t sleep on vivid styles from Fendi and Loewe).
As for how to wear woven shoes, some of our favorite stylish women show us how its done: Consider pairing them with a midi skirt and blazer, as designer and co-founder of La Veste La Veste Maria de la Orden did. Or, go casual à la Jeanne Damas, who opted for flared jeans and a floral shirt. Otherwise, take a page from fashion branding and consultant Anne-Victoire Lefevre’s style book and pair a flat woven style with bright white tights and a lace slip skirt for an easy-chic daytime look.
