With the Met Gala 2025 theme and the celebration of “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” we had already predicted that it was going to be a red carpet full of sleek tailoring and major, opulent details. What we didn’t anticipate was the spirit of Bianca Jagger through some of the evening’s women’s looks.
It all started with the appearance of Zendaya, who was styled by image architect Law Roach, in a snatched white Louis Vuitton suit by Pharrell Williams. She was then followed by Kerry Washington in a sophisticated Jonathan Simkhai design, and finally, Anna Sawai in a nipped-in Dior ensemble.
One of the most iconic couples of the 1970s, of course, was Bianca Jagger and Mick Jagger. The Nicaraguan socialite married the Rolling Stones musician just nine months after meeting at a rock concert in France. They wed at a Saint Tropez registry office, where the bona fide style icon bride wore an outfit by French couturier Yves Saint Laurent, consisting of a tailored jacket, a midi skirt, and platform sandals. She topped off her bridal look with a wide-brimmed hat and a short veil that fell delicately and sheerly over her face. That look would become iconic and heavily referenced across fashion and pop culture for decades to come.
Beyond her nuptials, Bianca Jagger would often don a white suit in various iterations. After her wedding, Jagger was photographed at London’s Heathrow Airport wearing a three-piece design with a bowler hat and cane—which give her a contemporarily appropriate dandy attitude.
It more or less became a part of her official uniform, with the model and actress making multiple appearances in meticulously tailored white suits. One was designed by the era-defining designer Halston for a star-studded party in New York in 1974; the second, a double-lapel jacket to match a shirt with a subtle black bow tied just below the collar, which she was photographed in while walking with her daughter Jade on the streets of London in 1979.
Zendaya, of course, teamed up with her stylist Law Roach and Louis Vuitton’s Pharrell Williams to create her own chic zoot suit. While it hits all the wonderful notes necessary for a true homage to Black dandyism, the look also channels the attitude and feminine dandyism of Bianca Jagger. Zendaya’s hat was also a visual marker that recalls Jagger’s wedding day headgear.
Kerry Washington’s look stuck notes even closer to Jagger’s wedding day outfit: Composed of a jacket with a slit in the back, translucent skirt, a wide-brimmed hat, and stilettos, it was also a sartorial wink to the wasp silhouette that Christian Dior (Saint Laurent’s once-mentor) popularized after World War II.
Anna Sawai, the last to walk the red carpet in the bright white zoot suit, opted for a three-piece suit signed by Dior that she complemented with a pair of dandyish gloves and Cartier jewelry. The Japanese actress, like Zendaya, pushed ahead with the more masculine elements of Jagger’s ventures in suiting by adding a tie.
